TERMITES (Isoptera)
Termites prevalent to the Philippines are: Nasutes, Mound Building, Micro Termites, and the voracious Philippine Milk Termites
During the onset of the rainy season, May – June, swarms or reproductive individuals (gamu-gamo) fly in the light. The winged swarms drop to the ground and pair off to start a colony underground or wherever suitable.
Termites are insects with a caste system and rigid functionality. They consist of worker termites, who forage for food, the king and queen, who lay thousands upon thousands of eggs a day, and soldier termites, who protect the king and queen from natural enemies like ants. They are good for the environment as their diet helps with recycling wood and plant matter. However, termites are not good for homes and structures as they feed on cellulose, a substance found in our clothes, boxes, paper, wood, books, etc.
Did you know…
…that termite queens can live as long as 50 years? That’s a very long lifespan that any insect can have!
Why we want them treated:
They damage our home’s structure, compromising our safety and that of our loved ones. They don’t even spare our books, photo albums, antiques, and clothes! They literally ruin everything.
